Announcer:

Hello everyone, welcome to the Millionaire Dentist Podcast, brought to you by Four Quadrants Advisory. On this podcast, we break down the world of dentist finances, and business practices. To help you become the millionaire dentist you deserve to be. Please be advised, we do speak with an honest tongue and may not be safe for work. Now here's your host, Alan Berry.

Alan Berry:

Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Millionaire Dentist Podcast. I'm your host, Alan Berry. And today we have three guests, two in the studio, and one via Skype. Joining me in the studio is Kathy Collins, Director of Tax and Accounting here at Four Quadrants and Casey Hiers, Director of National Sales, also with four quadrants. On Skype, we have a very special guest, Dr. Karyl Patten, President of the American Association of Women Dentists. For those of you that are not familiar with the AAWD, they have been around for almost 100 years.

Alan Berry:

They started back in 1921, and since then, they have helped thousands upon thousands of women dentists via mentoring programs, sharing information, sharing resources, offering networking opportunities, and just really staying true to their mission statement of enriching the lives of women dentists. Here on the Millionaire Dentist Podcast. We thought it would be a great idea to bring Dr. Patten on so she could talk about the upcoming AAWDs 2017 annual conference. But before that, I'd like to ask Kathy a question. Kathy, do you think that the AAWD is something that most women dentists could benefit from?

Kathy Collins:

Absolutely. I do believe that in any industry, you're going to have a difference between men and women. But in the long end, the women typically have the work-life balance more than men do, because they typically stay home with the kids. And in dentistry, it's even bigger because production is what makes you money. So you have to figure out that balance as to how many days a week you work to make up for that production, still be home for your family, and that can be a difficult balance. And I think the other big issue is typically staff of dentistry offices are women, which creates an immediate difference with how do you interact with your staff? So women tend to want to be friends and you want to be friendly, but you can't be their friends. And that's a difficult balance, and they need to kind of figure that out.

Alan Berry:

That's a good point, Kathy. I really didn't think about the work life balance. Dr. Patten, is that something that you find to be true as well?

Dr. Karyl Patten:

That is one of the things that when when I go and I travel all across the country, that is one of the things that is the number one question is, how do we work our lives, how do we have our kids, how do we balance our budget, and how do we do all of this?" And you need support for that, and women find that support with other women. Not saying that they don't find it with men, but women find it with other women, and they know what exactly the trajectory that they're traveling.

Alan Berry:

Sounds like Dr. Patton, with your organization, that you guys share a lot of stories and information with fellow members. And that kind of brings me to my next thought is you guys have a big event coming up soon, is that right?

Dr. Karyl Patten:

Yes, we do. Please mark your calendars for September 22 and 23 for our 96th annual convention in Amelia Island, Florida, a lot of sighting opportunities that's happening in our meeting.

Alan Berry:

What could attendees expect to see, to hear, to feel? I've never been to one of these, so what happens?

Dr. Karyl Patten:

The major thing that happens is some of the continuing education. And that's something, we're offering 10 hours of continuing education and that's the major thing that's happening. But the thing that's even probably more major than that is the networking opportunities and the opportunities to get direct mentorship for women who made seven figure salary in dentistry, women who work in public health, you have that opportunity to relate to all of them because they will all be at this meeting.

Alan Berry:

Okay, excellent. Now I believe Casey Hiers, Director of Sales here at Four Quadrants, are you going to be there too?

Casey Hiers:

I am.

Alan Berry:

Tell me, Casey, what are you looking forward to?

Casey Hiers:

The venue that the board has selected is second to none. Amelia Island, Florida, if you haven't been there, it's fantastic. The resort that this event is at is fantastic. It's going to be a great backdrop for networking and a lot of that interaction that the AAWD find so important. I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of the members of the AAWD, and then they've given me the opportunity to speak to the members. And the same expertise that these members treat their patients with clinically, we're going to help give them tools to treat the business and finance side of their practices with that same expertise.

Alan Berry:

If you have never heard Casey speak at an event, you're in for a treat. Casey, I think the last time I heard you talk at an event like this, I'd learned so much about the business side of running a dental practice, that it almost made me want to go out and become a dentist. So Casey's going to be sharing some expertise and knowledge on how to run your practice better. What about some of the fun things that are going on Dr. Patten, but can you tell us about some of those things what's, what's going to be happening.

Dr. Karyl Patten:

Parasailing, tuba diving. It's just a beautiful island, there's plenty of opportunities to go golfing. And the great thing about the meeting is most of our continuing education will be done by 2:00 and then you can go with your family and kind of enjoy the beautiful beaches of Florida. And so it's going to be action packed, but we've set up the meeting so that we could have two tracks, a clinical track and a team track. And both of those tracks are going to offer two different things. The clinical track is for members of your dental team, and we're offering things such as key financial strategies, we're talking about leadership and wealth. In our clinical tracks, we're going to do some things with implants and different crowns and that kind of thing. So it's going to be pretty action packed. And at the end of it all, you will get the 10 hours of continuing education.

Alan Berry:

So, you're going to have fun, but you're also going to get a benefit from it as well. You're going to get some education and some knowledge walking away, hopefully some new friendships and some new contacts to speak with later.

Dr. Karyl Patten:

Absolutely. But you got to understand we're female dentists, we think dentistry is fun, but we think the beach is fine as well.

Alan Berry:

Now, Kathy, you're going to right?

Kathy Collins:

Yes, I am.

Alan Berry:

Is there something that you're looking forward to?

Kathy Collins:

I am actually really looking forward to intermixing with all of these women and finding out what they love about dentistry, the difficulties they find in dentistry, and trying to be a liaison just to help them.

Alan Berry:

Now, since you're a CPA, I'm guessing, is it okay if some dentists some questions to come on up and ask you?

Kathy Collins:

Absolutely. I'm going to make myself as available as I can. Again, I love the beach, I love hanging out, so I will be there and offer any advice I can.

Alan Berry:

So if you see Kathy sitting by the pool by her, maybe a fruity drink with some light alcohol in it, or do you want heavy alcohol, and she'll be happy to answer any of your accounting questions. Is that fair?

Kathy Collins:

Absolutely fair.

Alan Berry:

Dr. Patent, in a lot of these events, typically, there's some type of social media hashtags so people that don't know each other can kind of communicate via Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Do you guys have a social media hashtag that you're using for this event?

Dr. Karyl Patten:

We do #aawd2017, aawd2017, that's our hashtag.

Alan Berry:

So if you're looking for a little bit of fun in the sun, some active networking, learning some financial knowledge of how to make your practice run better, you'll want to head on over to their website aawd.org Or give them a call at 1-800-920-2293. It is my understand that they do have people there ready to answer your questions and to sign you up for their event. I want to thank you so much, Dr. Patten, for giving us some of your time. I know you're a busy person, so I really appreciate you coming on here today. Casey, Kathy, thank you for stopping by. And you the listener, I want to thank you for stopping by and checking out our podcasts. Hopefully you'll be able to make it to the AAWDs 2017 conference, and if we don't see you there, we'll see you on the next podcast.
